“Mary Jane” is first identified (below) in the marriage documents for her son, Floyd. She is identified as “Jane S.” in her daughter’s, Sarah J’s, marriage to John Brown. The “S.” believed to be for “Sanford” surname. See notes below.

Name: Alexander F. Garrison
Spouse: Nancy E. R. Browning
Mother: Mary J. Garrison
Father: James M. Garrison
Birth: 1837 Charlotte Co., Virginia
Marriage: 10 Dec 1862 Henrico County, Virginia

Name: Wm. F. Garrison
Gender: Male
Marital Status: Widowed
Race: White
Age: 46
Birth Date: 1838
Birth Place: Charlotte Co.
Marriage Date: 14 Feb 1884
Marriage Place: Henrico County, Virginia
Father:
James N. Garrison
Mother:
Mary Jane Garrison
Spouse:
Adriella Shaw

Mary Jane is identified in Alexander Floyd’s marriage record. Of significance is the fact that the 1850 Charlotte census shows that Virginia A and Moses W came from “Staffordshire”, Virginia. James Barnett ca 1827 Garrison (tick-mark in 1840 Charlotte County census) returned to Stafford County and married Elizabeth Harriet Knight before 1847.

Mary Jane Garrison probably was a “Sanford”. A researcher sent me this message when I asked about her Garrison connection:

"Hello Jim, My connection through James N Garrison would be through his son Alexander Floyd Garrison and Nancy Ellen Browning as far as kinship. However, the Garrison Family of Stafford Co, Virginia goes back further than that. The Garrison Family and The Sanford Family of Stafford Co, Virginia were also great friends of each other. If I recall they were neighbors for many, many generations. My 3 x great grandparents Joseph Sanford 1805 and Agnes J Crawford of Stafford Co, Virginia. Moses W Garrison and Lawrence Sanford 1778 of Stafford Co, were also good friends. These are just a few things I can remember off the top of my head. I would have to pull our Family Bible to get more into detail.”

Note Mother: Jane S; S probably for Sanford surname
****.

Name: Sarah J. Garrison
Gender: Female
Marital status: Single
Age: 21
Birth Date: 1841
Birth Place: Charlotte Co., VA
Marriage Date: 6 Feb 1862
Marriage Place: Henrico Co., Virginia
Father:
James N. Garrison
Mother: Jane S. ****
Spouse: John Brown
Notes for James N (Spouse 1)
James N 1808 Garrison was Moses 1808 Garrison’s twin brother.

James “M” Garrison is in the 1830 census, together with his spouse, Mary Jane, and their daughter, Virginia ca 1829.

***************
From HO:
From a land tax standpoint, he only shows up in one year — 1836. His line item shows 200 acres, acquired from John Short
***************
James 1808, wife, Mary Jane, and children moved to Charlotte County, Virginia after Moses W 1833 Garrison was born. James Barnett 1827 Garrison returned to Stafford County and married Elizabeth Harriet Knight before 1850.
***************
Alexander Floyd, Sarah J, and Louisa Garrison were born in Charlotte County. Mary Jane, maiden name unknown, appears to have died before 1850 (Louisa’s birth?), between 1844 and 1850.

***************
Alexander and Sarah have marriage records in Henrico County. Louisa is found in the 1860 Henrico census and Alexander and family show up in the 1870 and later census. James 1808 Garrison could have died in Charlotte County or Henrico County. Logic would point to him moving to Henrico County if that is where his wife’s family lived. We would expect to see his younger children living with their maternal grand parents, aunts or uncles in the 1860 census which isn’t the case.

John R Garrison
Vs
Moses W Garrison, Roy A M Garrison, Moses Garrison, Alexander F Garrison, and Mary I Garrison.

Mentions Roy AM Garrison and Moses W Garrison being absent defendants. Also Moses Garrison’s residence unknown to the plaintiff, and HR Conway the guardian ad litem of the infant defendants Alexander F Garrison and Mary I Garrison.

On consideration whereof the court doth order that one of the commissioners of this court do state and settle the account of John R Garrison administrator of Moses Garrison decd and an account of any advancements made by Moses Garrison decd in his lifetime to any of his heirs and distributes and an account of any payments made by the said John R Garrison adm as aforesaid to any of the said heirs and distributes of Moses Garrison decd and make a report to court.

Note: Alexander F is one of 2 “infants” identified when settling Moses 1775 Garrison’s estate after his death in 1858. The other is a Mary I. Because Alexander was legally under age and the fact that he had a guardian (not his father), James 1808, his father, must have died before 1858.

James may have died in Henrico County where some of his children are found in the 1860 census.
