Notes for James Barnett Garrison

James *Barnett” is not shown in 1830 Stafford County census.. He is represented in the 1840 Charlotte County census, age 5-9. If he was 9 years old in 1840, meaning he was born 1830-1831, he would have been 16 or 17 when his son John William was born January 22, 1847. *Barnet” Garrison in son’s, Jackson’s, death record.

There is a tick mark representing Virginia A Garrison, James Barnett’s “older” sister in the 1830 census. This means James 1) was missed in the 1830 census or 2) he was born after the census was taken on June 1, 1830.

James 1808 definitely had 3 sons (two age 5-9, and one under 5) represented in the 1840 Charlotte County census: James B, Moses and Alexander Floyd.

James Barnett was missed and not counted in the 1830 census if he was born in 1827 (as future census indicate). The important detail is that James 1808 Garrison’s sons are identified: James Barnett 1827, Moses W 1833, and Alexander.

The 1850, 1870, 1880, and 1900 census all show James was born about 1827; the 1860 census shows he was born about 1828.

I believe the 1830 and 1840 census were correct and James B was born in 1830. I believe James’ son, John William, was born when James was 17.

“Mr Barnett Garrison was overcome by heat while riding to Stafford court Wednesday, and fell from his horse. He was carried to his home in a very weak condition, and attended by Dr. Stone.”
