Notes for Sarah Jane Shumate
(Sarah) Jane Shumate is shown in the 1850 Crawford County census living with Ira Bradford Pidcock and his wife, Malinda Shumate Pidcock.

Sarah cannot be Malinda’s daughter or she would have her father’s surname, not Shumate.

“Jane” Shumate’s age in the 1850 census, abt 20, means she was born around 1830. Sarah is logically Malinda’s niece, possibly but improbably, her sister.

Jane, being Malinda’s niece, would be the daughter of either Stephen or Samuel Shumate, Malinda’s brothers. Samuel had a daughter, Sarah Jane Shumate, who was born abt 1841. She is shown in the 1850 Shannon County, Missouri census; consequently, (Sarah) Jane Shumate is probably Stephen 1805 Shumate’s daughter.

Born around 1830, Jane’s birth year is ideally spaced among her siblings.
