Notes for George Washington Garrison
The Battle That Saved Missouri For The UnionOn March 7-8, 1862, over 23,000 soldiers fought here to decide the fate of Missouri and was a turning point of the war in the West. The 4,300 acre battlefield honors those who fought and died on these grounds. Pea Ridge was the most pivotal Civil War battle west of the Mississippi River and is one of the most intact Civil War battlefields in the United States. It has been said that he was shot in the shoulder & gangrene had set it & that its what they believe killed him. I am still working on finding out if he did die on March 6, 1862 because The Battle of Elk Horn Tavern/ Battle of Pea Ridge didn't happen until the morning of March 7, 1862 & lasted through March 8, 1862. George may have been wounded in a skirmish before the actual battle.
Burial: Non-Cemetery Burial
Specifically: I have not found where George is buried. They said that all the Union soldiers that were killed at Pea Ridge were buried in a mass grave, but had been removed to The National Cemetery in Fayetteville, Arkansas. I did not find him there.
